@rufustheduck If you need to know stuff, ask, a lot of people follow the help hashtag and were really quite approachable.

I just joined Mastodon and am still wandering around, trying to get a sense of the place.
-
@rufustheduck hello nice feline!
-
@rufustheduck wow! My black tomcat also has a "cow" sister. 😀
-
@EvelineSulman wonderful picture!
-
@rufustheduck welcome 👋
most folks do an intro post to give folks a sense of their vibe.
-
@rufustheduck Welcome! Boost things you like, share what you love, and please provide alt text!
That's it. Thems the rules.
-
@MadAsAHatter @rufustheduck Welcome!
And yes - it's all about cats. Always has been
-
@rufustheduck you aré very welcome. I am also new here. New year, new goals. I came here because I had have enough of Facebook. They are overly intrusive with us.
Happy new year!
-
@catdad thank you! I'll keep it in mind
-
Oh, and I just read a very thought provoking thread by @fromjason, talking about the inherent differences between mastodon and social media platforms. They articulate many things I think about a lot.
-
@rufustheduck Welcome and Happy New Year!
-
@rufustheduck Welcome! You can't go wrong on Mastodon with cat photos (with alt text, as you've done). Glad to hear you'll be sharing more of them.
-
I've been here forever and never had a post get that many boosts, but I don't have a cat. He follows 40 people and you follow 2. My recommendation is to follow a lot more people than you would on a service with algos and boost a lot. But maybe I'm doing it wrong. Also give us an #introductions post to boost. Most are very willing to do that here.
-
@rufustheduck hi Rufus! Welcome to Mastodon - we like sleepy cats over here. Follow lots or people!
-
@anne @fromjason thank you for sharing this. I just read through and it's very interesting. I also came here looking for something different - maybe that's why this place has had such an immediate positive effect on me. I have a lot to learn about it, but I'm looking forward to doing so
-
@MadAsAHatter @rufustheduck I think the level of engagement with new posters is driven by what they have in their profile - I know I don't follow back anyone who hasn't filled in at least some basic information so I know what to expect from them in my timeline.
It is *very* different here to other social media platforms: when I started, I followed everyone who posted anything vaguely interesting, then whittled down my follow list once I'd work out what I wanted (and yes, cat pictures featured in that list: send them!)
-
@cherylgk thank you. Happy new year to you too
-
@jeridansky I have approximately a billion pictures of my two cats, so I'll probably share a couple
-
@IPngNetworks thank you - I'm following everyone!
