@GossiTheDog Every country should move toward banning Twitter given its recent and intentional CSAM problem. Good on the UK for possibly being the first. As for your Mastodon instance, open registrations without approval should be discouraged anyway. That's the only antispam measure we've got.
-
One for #mastoadmin - I have reason to believe the UK government may ban Twitter within a week or two, so you may see an influx of users.
-
@quanin it’s not the only anti spam measure on my instance.
-
@GossiTheDog It helps, though. Out of curiosity, what else are you using? I don't have that problem yet but it's a federated instance so I probably will.
-
@quanin the built in Captcha support filters almost all of it, I also manually review new users and IP block problematic subnets.
My server has been up for 3 years as open registration the whole time, on the Join Mastodon server list too, and there’s never been a spam problem.
-
@GossiTheDog HCaptcha is Mastodon's only CAPTCHA option, and that poses accessibility concerns. You may be inadvertently preventing users with some disabilities from signing up on your instance before they reach the pending approval stage.

@bit @implementcontrols @GossiTheDog but mY fReE sPeAcH

-
@davey_cakes @jpages @GossiTheDog yeah, basically inherited the same rules as the EU after Brexit.
-
@GossiTheDog What about age verification? Isn't that required now? I thought Mastodon either couldn't or wouldn't age verify.
-
@mkj @joannaholman @0xabad1dea @GossiTheDog learning how to absorb inflex of people from decaying corporate nonsense is something we're going to have to get good at, and it has both Technical and social aspects
-
@jsbarretto @Umiamz @GossiTheDog if they don't, it will completely destroy m the Online safety act, which would be a good thing under any other circumstance but mixed in this case. The worst case is that the rich and Powerful are allowed to do whatever whereas People Like Us would be aggressively hunted under the law so we have to avoid that outcome
-
@growfediverse @fluffykittycat @GossiTheDog honestly, the thing I've seen he most is decision paralysis
if we can get someone on Fedi anywhere, that's 90% of the battle and they can slowly learn from there at their own pace
-
@fluffykittycat @Umiamz @GossiTheDog Yeah. If you're gonna pass such a rubbish piece of legislation, at least make use of it, right?
-
@OctaviaConAmore @growfediverse @GossiTheDog we should recommend people specific communities, strong enough to stand on their own, with federation as an additional benefit
-
@jsbarretto @Umiamz @GossiTheDog because it was never about protecting children. It never is. It's a homophobic pro genocide law and if X isn't delt with we will know that beyond a shadow of a doubt
-
@fluffykittycat @growfediverse @GossiTheDog ideally, yes, but a lot of people nowadays want to be where everyone is, so the direction sorry of end up flipped from what you described: of we can get them to try fedi, they may find a community they feel comfortable in which they can eventually move closer to
I wish it wasn't that way, but I think we have to meet people where they are in a lot of ways

-
The boomers used the "Ban hammer" hard on Gen-X fun, do we not remember how that turned out?
Instead of banning stuff, why don't they just remove the Anti circumvention law that the US shoved down the throats of all its trading partners under threat of tariffs in order to keep US big tech monopoly? I mean, we already got the tariffs 😅
-
@GossiTheDog can all European countries block Xitter please???
Looong overdue!
-
@OctaviaConAmore @growfediverse @GossiTheDog I think that as things grow general awareness of how things work will go up. People are going to outgrow the corporate slop model
