@wsslmn @vosje62 @BuyFromEU Itโs a good idea, but it depends on what you need your smartphone for. If you use a significant number of apps only available currently for Android or iPhone, it could become a lot more difficult to migrate. Certain apps (Tahoma etc.) should be made available also for alternative smartphones like #fairphone Jolla etc.
-
Dutch university to start handing out only Fairphones to employees, instead of buying iPhones or Samsung.
-
@Fietsbel my Fairphone runs normal Android.
But an important reason to buy is to be able to switch to e/os later.๐
An alternative os was on my old phone not possible.The apps I need seems to work on e/os. Didn't come to switching to e/os yet. ๐
-
@vosje62 @wsslmn @BuyFromEU But Android belongs to Google. I donโt want to leave Apple to switch to Google, definitely not. And honestly, I expect to have to solve a lot of unpleasant technical issues, before Iโll be able to migrate, but I hope I can solve them.
-
@Fietsbel @vosje62 @BuyFromEU e/OS doesn't and also works fine.
-
@Fietsbel @vosje62 @BuyFromEU I have just accepted that certain apps are not there anymore, and to me that is fine for now.
-
@BuyFromEU proud Fairphone owner here.
-
@Fietsbel @vosje62 @wsslmn @BuyFromEU The Android Open Source Project doesn't belong to Google
-
@wsslmn @Fietsbel @BuyFromEU
Some apps (like smart home applications) drive on data scraping and won't work on an other os by choice. -
@vosje62 @Fietsbel @BuyFromEU I don't miss those. All I have for that is Home Assistant to collect data in one spot, and that seems to work fine.
-
@BuyFromEU
Nice!...sent from my fairphone!
Btw: there are some other options beside fairphone. With less american big tech than apple
-
@wsslmn @Fietsbel @BuyFromEU
Home assistant proves that it is not necessary (and not even wanted*) to have the data stored online.* you want it all to work if the internet is offline... ๐ฅด๐
-
@vosje62 @Fietsbel @BuyFromEU indeed, but it also means that you have to do some maintenance yourself, which has been fun so far.
I do have a wish for some more free time to tinker with it, and add some dashboards to track stuff.
-
@wsslmn when i switched from cable to 4-5G i had to rearrange my router, so I switched it all off 'for the moment'. (No home assistant here)
Now .... Many years later they are still offline.. ๐ ๐ and the house is running like clockwork! -
@TrVr @BuyFromEU @murena tap to pay won't work with e/OS. Biggest dealbreaker for me to be honest.
Is @murena working with EU to make #wero wallet the default maybe? -
@mfr @BuyFromEU @murena Marco maybe this has to do with the advanced Privacy settings. I need to put it off for the banking apps to work. The great thing about e/OS is you can set this on an app base. So yes the bank will know your IP location and maybe their trackers as well. But other apps get nothing.
-
@BuyFromEU Good move.
-
@mfr @TrVr @BuyFromEU @murena that looks a very, very minor inconvenience. Yes tap to pay doesn't work unless you use Curve, which is owned by a zionist. I just bring the credit card with me ๐คทโโ๏ธ
-
@danielezomg @TrVr @BuyFromEU @murena for privacy tap to pay is better (yes w/big tech at the moment, but itโs still better than paying with card for that, wero would be ideal eventually). Regardless I wonโt switch until my current phone dies, but fairphone is high on my list. I really like that companies (well at least one, more might follow) are having sustainable company phones on their agenda. Otoh the EU is pushing regulation that also forces the big brands to move in the right direction.
-
@vosje62 it just works. That's why I'm not a fan of elaborate automations involving stuff that could be controlled with a classic light switch. It is fun to do, but that is about it for me.
-
@wsslmn @vosje62 @BuyFromEU Thatโs nice, and under better circumstances, it would work also for me. But currently, we donโt know anymore where to stay for our pension age, and we travel between two countries, with an accomodation in each of them, also for family reasons. So we need a certain level of remote control also.
