And then later with a 60 minute delay on the account-registration-requiring, data-collecting, algorithmically-distorted US networks?

@leanderlindahl @MarkusKallifatides I have been trying to pitch that idea to Socialdemokraterna here in Stockholm as well.

@leanderlindahl @carl @bike4climate @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @HennaVirkkunen No time for that. We need to burn moar moneys on our own European sovereign AI bullsh*t because we are way behind US in burning their moneys: https://ec.social-network.europa.eu/@HennaVirkkunen/115899705825865675

@rhj @MarkusKallifatides that's great to hear. We just have to keep on making the argument for this, until we win. The marketing people who have the say in these matters, still get to serve their imagined audience this way, so they can't use that old tired argument of why we shouldn't do the right thing for our societies and democracies.

If you're in a position of leadership this is a perfect opportunity to lead and show the way. Our representatives aren't put there to follow the herd passively

I have always been thinking that we need a UN backed, controlled , and funded social network. If the UN can't do it, then maybe the EU can. I don't see how this couldn't be a public service.

It would have to start with the EU as a sufficiently wealthy and coherent entity with experience to such large scale projects, but be open to any country that shares common values and vision on how those could translate into modern digital news dissemination.

It feels that this is no longer a question of this being vaguely "desirable". It is an existential question and litmus test: Does Europe have a pulse?

I want to agree but the problem would be the same โ€“ centralized social media is always vulnerable for those in control.

Fediverse would be much more resilient since there is not one large owner that can throw it over at will.

The owner of instances' whims on Fediverse feature about as much problems than a centralized network, as well as the lack of operating staff for moderation.

Agree that Fediverse is not a solution without problems. Still, decentralised and open solutions are more resilient than centralised; Wikipedia celebrates 25th anniversary as a free, open and decentralised (regarding content contribution) solution.
